This newly released article was written by first author Robert Stern, PhD; and senior author Eric M. Reiman, MD. The research consisted of brain imaging studies in former NFL players and was done in collaboration with researchers from Banner Alzheimer’s Institute, Mayo Clinic Arizona and Boston University. The work demonstrated that:
- one can detect CTE in living athletes,
- the abnormalities are related to years of tackle football play but too subtle to use diagnostically in individual players at this time, and
- the cognitive symptoms are not due to Alzheimer’s disease.
